The Short Story
Dazza is the moniker of photographer/designer Darryl Chan.

He began his career in multimedia design, specialising in graphic, web and motion graphics design and production. Just as soon as he became a planner and strategist for online media, he quit his job to follow his passion (what a dirty word) in photography. Today Dazza captures moments, etched in the grains or zeroes and ones in a photograph as an aspiring phtogrphr.

The Self-Indulgent Long Story
Narrative
Dazza does design and photography. A creative studio which combines an acute sense of design perspective and poetically expressed photographs to create pretty things on paper and in pixels.

Hailing from the dungeons of The National Institute of Design, Melbourne Australia, Dazza geeked out over design and code, even conceptualising and managing the graduate multimedia show. On his return to Merlion Land, he joined award-winning interactive agency Paprika Global, where he climbed the ranks from a Media Designer to an Executive Producer for interactive media.

His love for revelling in pulling the perfect espresso, led Dazza on a sabbatical extracting shots as a barista. Over a badly shaped rosetta leaf, but a godly shot, one afternoon, Dazza comtemplated the humour of fixing one’s VPL in public.

This was when he realised his eyeballs didn’t come pre-installed with a built in shutter release. Today, Dazza just wishes people wouldn’t mistake a blink for a wink when he takes photos.

Voice
Dazza sees humour and meaning where most ignore regard, prefering to look at the brightside of the darkside, but crying with the darkside of the brightside. “I don’t prophesize saving the world with design or photography, but I surely can make a few people stop and ponder for a moment what a piece means.”

Ism
Dazza’s work is inclined towards pointing at the obvious beauty in the most obscure and mundane of the overlooked. He draws inspiration from the kid like strokes on an architect’s yellow trace, to black wash shading on inked skin. Obsessed with details, Dazza fusses over the shape of an arrow, nudging it back and forth with multiple versions before going back to the first.

Clients, Dazza professes that HE can do this, but YOU…really shouldn’t.

Recognition
In 2005, Dazza was the only Singaporean out of 17 Australian based finalists, in an invite-only design competition opened to 50 multi-disciplinary designers. His design and conceptual ideas for “CityCam Exchange” was exhibited in Melbourne and at the prestigious Milan International Furniture Fair in Milan, Italy.

Chalking up karma points, Dazza has contributed significantly to designing and developing websites for non-profit projects for the Singapore International Film Festival and The Pure Charity.
